Here are the supplies for your design journey

You’re at a pivotal point in your software product design career. Maybe, you’re

  • starting off, getting your foot in the door,

  • or, fulfilling your ambitions, positioning yourself for the next step,

  • or perhaps, taking a step back, realizing something needs to be different.

Wherever you are, you’re looking for advice, and some encouragement while you’re at it wouldn’t hurt.

Detach Instance is a practical and tactical product design newsletter on strategies to navigate the waters of your product design journey. I talk to designers through this newsletter, Superpeer, ADPList, and my own networks to learn about your unique situations. The frameworks and strategies I share here are my own, but inspired by your real career journeys. You have enough going on in your life, so I always provide tangible examples to make it obvious how to apply my tactics to your day-to-day.

This newsletter is organized into topic arcs. Each arc starts with tactic and framework-based articles, followed by interviews with current product designers from different companies and backgrounds. Our current topic arc is on emotional capacity.

Bring Detach Instance on your design journey

Brought to you by me, Kristin, a designer by trade and mentor by passion

Over the past 10 years, I’ve been on teams like Slack and Quora. Nowadays, I plug-in to early stage startups helping them build 0-to-1 products and grow their product momentum. I’ve consulted for everything from EdTech marketplaces, like Maven, to developer platforms, like Airplane.

I know what failure, confusion, and inequity feels like in this industry.

I also know you can find success, clarity, and inclusion, as long as you know where to look for it.

Keep growing with me through Detach Instance

Giving back to the community has always been a passion for me. For over the past 3 years, I’ve volunteered with Black Girls Code and have been a consistent design mentor on ADPList. There’s nothing more inspiring to me than seeing someone start as a student looking for their first design internship to a full-fledged product designer preparing for a stakeholder meeting. Through mentoring, I’ve learned there’s no “right” design career path and that success is always possible if you have tools.

While I still mentor students on ADPlist, I also provide professional mentorship via Superpeer. If you like what you see here, subscribe to my community on Superpeer for access to future, free resources and meet other designers in my mentee community.
